Range Rover Classic
Ambient temperature sensor installation
Customer installation guide

Feed the sensor harness from the digital dash
- Feed the flying lead from the digital dash harness through the firewall.
- Use either the left-hand wing grommet or right-hand wing grommet.
- Route the harness down through the engine bay toward the front bumper area.
- The sensor is on a Deutsch plug — if needed, disconnect it to feed through tight spots.

Expose the air deflection panel
- Remove the front grille.
- Behind the bumper, locate the black plastic airflow/deflection panel.
- This panel feeds outside air to the radiator and thermo fan assembly — this is the mounting area.

Prepare the mount point
- Gently lift the airflow/deflection panel.
- Remove one of the factory plastic push clips.
- Install the supplied Deutsch mounting clip (Christmas-tree style) in its place.
- No drilling or modification required.

Install and secure the sensor
- Push the sensor body into the mounting clip until it snaps firmly.
- Refit the airflow panel and grille.
- Confirm the harness:
- Has no sharp bends
- Is not pinched
- Does not contact fans, belts, or moving parts
Why this location is best
- Consistent airflow from outside the vehicle
- Protected from debris and direct weather
- Unaffected by engine-bay heat soak
- Stable readings during both idle and driving
- Mounting inside the engine bay will always read hotter than ambient.
Routing guidance
- Follow factory wiring paths or frame rails for a neat install.
- Keep away from exhaust headers, radiator fins, and AC lines.
- Use cable ties or clips only on fixed, non-hot components.
- Avoid any movement zones (fan shrouds, pulleys, steering linkages).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not mount near radiator or coolant hoses.
- Do not tape or cable-tie to AC lines.
- Do not bury the sensor behind plastic or metal — it must see real airflow.
- Do not leave the sensor dangling or unsecured.
Testing the reading
- After installation, power the dash and check temperature.
- Small variation from outside temperature is normal (±2–5°C).
- Expect readings to stabilise after 1–2 minutes of driving.
- Large swings or very high readings = sensor is heat-soaked → relocate.
